The Year of Decaydance
December 31st, 2009
2009 will go down in history as a rollercoaster year for the world economy and the music business. For the Decaydance family, it will go down as the year Travie, Brendon and Patrick introduced the world to “Open Happiness”; Cobra Starship took over the charts with “Good Girls Go Bad”; Hey Monday embarked on the Believers Never Die Tour then followed up with their first headline tour; Fall Out Boy released their greatest hits album; The Cab found inspiration in Cancun and wrote their new record; Four Year Strong Explained It All; The Ready Set signed to Decaydance and recorded his debut album; Travis went out with Staying Alive for MTV; and The Academy Is… released an EP and prepared to celebrate 5 years since “Almost Here”.
And while 2009 may seem insurmountable, it is only just a beginning. In 2010, we’ve got more than a few aces up our sleeve. The Cab, Four Year Strong, Hey Monday, Panic! At The Disco, The Ready Set and Travie will all be coming out with new albums. Cobra Starship has a big surprise in the works. The Academy Is… will be playing their 5 year anniversary show. Panic! At The Disco is going to change how you’ve thought of them. And that’s not all. We have big plans and may be announcing something new soon. In 2010, we plan on doing one thing: bringing back real music to you.
While it would be next to impossible to narrow down our top moments of 2009, we’ve asked the Decaydance family to reminisce and put together their top-5 moments of the year.
THE ACADEMY IS…
1. Preparing to celebrate 5 years since “Almost Here”
2. Sisky’s 30 Hours in Santiago, Chile.
3. Bonding as brothers in TAI as we traveled across the country yet again on The Fall Ball Tour. It really felt like our first tour in many ways.
4. Seeing our friends in Cobra Starship get in the top-5 with “Good Girls Go Bad”
5. Hanging at the Metro in Chicago during a Snow Storm, collecting food for the homeless and meeting new friends.
THE CAB
1. Cancun
Not only was the Cancun trip one of the top moments of the year, it was one of the best times we have had in our entire lives. Being in a tropical paradise with your best friends and staying in the Real World Suite to write music was heaven on earth. From slapping each other’s sunburn, having a little too much fun at the nightclubs, and writing music with each other..it truly was a vacation to remember.
2. The What happens in Vegas Tour
Getting word that we were finally able to headline our first nation-wide tour ever was such an amazing moment for us. We had worked so hard for years and to finally be able to go onstage and to be able to play for an hou rwas the best gift we could have ever received. We were so happy to be able to play more songs for everyone, and it really showed us that hard work pays off. Our fans made the shows incredible and we can’t wait to hopefully do it again soon.
3. Hoodwinked
When asked if we would play the Hoodwinked shows before the Bamboozle festivals, I think we said “yes” before they even finished the question. It was so refreshing and fun to learn someone else’s songs for a whole set. We went with Queen because it was a challenge. Every song had its own character, and I think it really pushed, expanded, and inspired us as musicians and songwriters. Next time I’ll be sure to wear Freddie’s cape and glittery outfit.
4. VMA’s. A few of us got to go to the VMA’s this year for the third year in a row. It’s always a blast, and we had the opportunity to meet some bands that we look up to such as Green Day and Muse. The best part about the VMA experience this year though, would be getting the chance to support our friends in Cobra Starship as they were nominated for some awards! (They got robbed dammit. We demand a recount!) Being in the room when the Kanye/Taylor war went down was pretty insane too. We got to be in the same room as Megan Fox too. We fell in love… and the rest is history.
5. Writing for the New Record
This isn’t a specific event, but it is still one of the best parts of 2009 for us. When we finally came home and got to enjoy time off we wasted no time….getting back to work. We had so much music inside of us dying to get out that we started writing songs and recording demos right away. We have been writing in Hollywood, New York, Mexico, Las Vegas, and even Utah. Though 2009 was amazing to us, we cannot even begin to put into words how excited we are for 2010. We can’t wait for everyone to hear our new music! Look out!
COBRA STARSHIP
1. Hitting Top 40!! (2x)
2. Our first time on a private Jet
3. Latin American VMA’s performance with Paulina Rubio.
4. Learning about Weezer’s love for Cobras.
5. Not getting arrested.
FALL OUT BOY
1. Sharing the stage with Blink-182 and the connection of the live crowd with ‘Folie A Deux’ despite the state of the music industry.
2. Playing Obamas inagural ball and receiving an xmas card from the white house
3. Taking the next generation of punk pop bands on tour on the believers never die part deux tour.
4. Fighting for our ideals with art (poverty, prop 8, equal rights) and creating Fall Out Toy Works- a cohesive pop medium meant to to challenge peoples minds with in the constraints of pop culture
5. Finally taking a breath. Growing up and accepting our past and future on “Believers Never Die” album. Stepping back and watching the scene grow.
FOUR YEAR STRONG
1. Josh separating his shoulder for the fourth time. “I was beginning to get anxiety wondering if they would always be separated in odd numbers.”
2. Our annual holiday show in 09 was the best one yet, all of our friends and family were there, right on Christmas weekend. Total blast and Worcester represented as always.
3. Getting to go to Amsterdam. We’ve wanted to travel here since we were just wee-lads. It lived up to the hype, the smoke filled coffee shops made us orgasm repeatedly for the two days we got to lurk around. The show at the melkweg was great too!
4. From Josh: My little sister getting accepted to the colleges of her choice. I was really excited to find out my little sister got accepted into the Coast Guard Academy. She’d been storming around waiting for a response, and we’re all really really proud of her.
5. Dan Getting Engaged! Very exciting news in the four year strong camp, congratulations Dan and Anna!
HEY MONDAY
1. Getting to go to the VMAs as a Buzznet.com correspondant and interview a bunch of artists, including all our friends.
2. We headlined our first tour in the UK and sold out every single show. We couldn’t believe it. Cassadee crowd surfed for the first time on that tour.
3. We heard “How You Love Me Now” on the radio. It was the most exhilarating feeling for all of us.
4. We toured with Fall Out Boy and got to see the world with them.
5. We found out we are on the AP tour and the whole 2010 Warped Tour.
THE READY SET
1. Meeting all my new Decaydance friends (awwwwwww)
2. Realizing that I may have followed pop culture too closely this year.
3. Pretty much any TV performance Lady Gaga did this year. She has the craziest ideas ever.
4. The Justin Bieber Riot at that mall. Reminds me of a TRS show, except without the riot and the mall.
5. The whole Kanye/Taylor Swift thing. It’s a pretty cliche answer, but it’s undeniable. Who’s side are YOU on?
